Terms of Service

Last updated: July 12, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of Selah, including the companion experience known as Eli (together, the "Service"). By creating an account or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

1. Who can use Selah

Selah is currently in a closed beta and access is limited to invited testers. You must be at least 18 years old to create an account and use the Service. We do not knowingly permit anyone under 18 to use Selah at this stage, and we may ask for confirmation of your age or close an account we reasonably believe belongs to someone under 18.

2. What Selah is — and is not

Selah is a Christian companion app. Eli, the companion voice inside Selah, is an artificial intelligence system designed to support reflection, prayer, journaling, and scripture engagement. Eli is disclosed clearly as an AI companion, not a human being, and:

  • Eli does not speak in the first person as God, Jesus, or scripture, and claims no divine or pastoral authority.
  • Eli is not a licensed pastor, spiritual director, counselor, therapist, physician, or attorney, and nothing Eli says should be treated as professional pastoral, medical, mental health, financial, or legal advice.
  • Eli is not a substitute for your church, clergy, community, or the people in your life.

Selah is meant to be a companion between the moments you already have with real people and real community — not a replacement for either.

3. Selah is not an emergency service

If you are in immediate danger, thinking about harming yourself or someone else, or facing a medical emergency, please contact your local emergency number right away (such as 911 in the United States, 999 in the United Kingdom, or your country's equivalent). Do not rely on Selah or Eli for emergency response.

Selah includes automated safeguards that watch for language suggesting a mental health or safety crisis and will surface region-appropriate crisis resources when that happens — for example, calling or texting 988 in the United States, or contacting Samaritans at 116 123 in the United Kingdom. These resources are provided as a helpful pointer to real human support, not as a guarantee of any particular response time, availability, or outcome, and they do not replace contacting emergency services directly when you are in danger.

4. How Selah handles scripture

Any Bible verse shown inside Selah is displayed exactly as written in the translation provided in the app — never invented or paraphrased by Eli. Scripture is always shown in a manner that is visually distinct from Eli's own conversational responses. If you notice a discrepancy in a displayed verse, please contact us using the details at the end of these Terms.

5. Your account and your content

You are responsible for keeping your account credentials secure and for anything that happens under your account. You retain ownership of the messages, journal entries, and other content you create in Selah ("Your Content"). By using the Service, you grant Selah a limited license to store, process, and transmit Your Content solely as necessary to operate, maintain, and improve the Service, consistent with our Privacy Policy.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to use Selah to:

  • Attempt to extract, reverse engineer, or misuse the systems behind the Service in a way that could compromise its safety, security, or the safety of other users.
  • Impersonate another person, misrepresent your identity, or attempt to bypass age, access, or safety controls.
  • Upload or transmit content that is unlawful, that infringes another person's rights, or that is intended to harass, threaten, or harm another person.
  • Use the Service in any way that violates applicable law.

7. Beta access, availability, and changes

Selah is presently offered as a closed, invite-based beta. Features, availability, response times, and access may change, be limited, or be interrupted at any time as the product continues to develop. We may add, modify, or remove features, and we may pause or end the beta program, without that being treated as a breach of these Terms — though we will try to give reasonable notice for anything that materially affects your access to your own content.

8. Your data rights

You can request an export of the data associated with your account, or request that your account and associated data be deleted, at any time from within the app or by contacting us directly. Deleting your account removes your content from active systems; see our Privacy Policy for details on retention and how deletion is carried out.

9. Intellectual property

The Selah name, the Eli name, the Selah leaf mark, and the design, text, and software that make up the Service (excluding Your Content and any scripture text, which belongs to its respective rights holders) are owned by Selah or its licensors and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. Nothing in these Terms grants you rights to our trademarks or branding beyond what is needed to use the Service as intended.

10. Disclaimers

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of inaccuracies, and — while we treat scripture accuracy as a non-negotiable design requirement — we cannot guarantee that every response from Eli will be free of error.

11. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Selah and its team will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, arising from or related to your use of the Service. Nothing in these Terms is intended to limit liability in ways that are not permitted under applicable law.

12. Suspension and termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service if we reasonably believe you have violated these Terms, created risk or legal exposure for Selah or another person, or if we discontinue the Service or the beta program. You may stop using the Service and request deletion of your account at any time.

13. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time as the product develops, particularly as it moves from a closed beta toward a wider release. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where practical, provide more direct notice inside the app.

14. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which Selah's operating entity is established, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, except where local law requires otherwise for consumers in your jurisdiction.

15. Contact

Questions about these Terms can be sent to joinselahapp@gmail.com.

This page is published for transparency during Selah's closed beta and is provided in plain language rather than dense legal boilerplate. It will be reviewed by qualified legal counsel before Selah is available to the general public, and may be updated as a result.
